Karen Ruet

Karen Ruet is a proud New Brunswicker with deep roots in the province, and is one of the founding members of the SilverFish Photography Collective. A graduate of Laval University’s French for Non-Francophones certificate program, and Acadia University’s English Literature Bachelor of Arts, she studied photography part-time at Toronto Metropolitan University before studying photography full-time in Fredericton, New Brunswick at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Her love of the medium originated with her dad, who documented his life and family with a passion that fed Karen’s soul and sensibilities. He purchased a manual SLR camera for her through her cousin Ken when she was 16. After graduation, Karen simultaneously worked freelancing at the New Brunswick Telegraph Journal as a photojournalist and arts writer, and as the Coordinator of Fredericton’s artist-run centre, Gallery Connexion. Soon after, she started teaching Advanced Black and White Photography at NBCCD, where she is now a full-time instructor in the Photography/Videography Studio. Karen has many works in the permanent collection of the University of New Brunswick, has exhibited with SilverFish in more than thirty shows, frequently exhibits with faculty at NBCCD and co-curated Phantom Presence: Contemporary Photography in New Brunswick with Beaverbook Art Gallery curator and director, Terry Graff. She was the Coordinator of the George Fry Gallery at NBCCD from 2005-2023.
