Frozen Embryo Transfer
The use of frozen embryo transfer has started to become more popular as horse breeders are finding it to be very useful in their breeding methods. There are many benefits to using it as an alternative to standard breeding. For starters, a mare can can be bred for more than one foal a season, which increases the value of the mare for breeding. Injured mares can still be viable for breeding as they do not need to be the one carrying the foal.
A frozen embryo transfer has benefits beyond what standard embryo transfer has to offer. With basic embryo transfer, there would need to be recipient mares ready to receive the embryos. They would need to be at the same stage in their cycle as the donor mare and they would need to be in the same location, which can be difficult to set up. Using a frozen embryo transfer allows for the embryos to be moved to any location and can be used whenever the recipient mare is ready.
